-He was happy to hear that the Bronxville flood mitigation project is going well and noted that the County provided $3 million in funding.

Mayor Marvin thanked Legislator Nolan for his support of Bronxville and “for always reaching out and being our voice at the County.”

Thank You to Trustee Behrens

Mayor Marvin introduced Trustee Behrens, who is retiring from the Board. You can read Trustee Behrens remarks at the meeting here.

Deputy Mayor Underhill spoke about Trustee Behrens and particularly her contributions, such as her work on Malty Park. He also said she was a great colleague, who approached issues with “intensity, understanding, compassion, and also humor.”

Trustee Knapp also spoke about Mary Behrens, who was a year ahead of her in high school, where Behrens was a "renowned runner." She said that Mary "brought people together" and expressed how much she enjoyed serving with Mary on the Board.

Trustee Fredericks said that he has known Mary since they were classmates starting in third grade at Bronxville. He also remembers Mary as a great runner. He further said that Mary has brought "collegiality and civility" to all our discussions, and that she has a tremendous gift in “finding ways to build consensus.”  He also said that she always looks to make sure that the Board is doing what’s best for the Village. Additionally, he said that Mary has been a ‘tremendous source of advice and counsel” who “made us all better Trustees,” and that she will “be greatly missed.”

Mayor Marvin said she ‘loves strong women and you are one of them.”  She said that “Mary just loves this Village," and spoke about Mary's “authenticity," "honesty," and willingness "to disagree in such a civil and kind and smart way.”

Chief Satriale also thanked Mary and said she was a ‘staunch advocate” for anything that the police department asked. He noted that she convinced the department to get into social media. He said that their relationship went from a professional relationship to a personal friendship.

Crawford Drainage Project and Enhanced Park

Trustee Fredericks provided an update on the Crawford drainage project and the new park design. The park design will integrate elements of gardening, pathways, and an inner area for a dog park. He said that the hope is that this will be a park attractive to people who use it now - nannies with strollers, older people - as well as to others. Concepts are posted on the village website.

Resident Ben Lentz spoke about this project as well. Trustee Fredericks thanked him for his work. He said they are trying to make this park “available to all people” who use it.

Another resident involved with this project congratulated everyone for doing a really great job on this park. She is happy that they will have a water fountain and pathways (she suggested the village include a measurement of the pathway for those walking or running. The loop is almost ¼ mile. She also suggested they not have benches next to the trash cans. Bill Fredericks noted that the plans at this point are “concept plans.”

Resolutions

The Board then approved a variety of resolutions, including:

-$4,000 more from the State.

-$12,000 for motion sensors for the Village paddle court lighting.

-$19,000 to update cameras at Village Hall.

-The Village is extending the “no parking” zone on Parkway Road by 50 feet. The Village will have a public hearing on this issue.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
